Carefree of Colorado RV Awning Soft Connect Replacement: DIY How To Replace A Carefree Soft Connect
Переглядів 13 тис.Рік тому
What is a "Soft Connect"? Carefree of Colorado powered RV patio awnings often include something called a Uniguard, which is a metal wrap that prevents the awning from billowing in the wind while driving down the highway. The Soft Connect is a section of fabric that attaches the Uniguard to the side of the RV. Since that fabric is ALWAYS exposed to the sun (even when the awning is stowed), it's ...

    My Dometic awning is 25 years old and this process worked great. The only difference was on mine you insert a nail on the side of the left end cap to lock the spring instead of using a screwdriver to insert it through two holes as described in this video. Also, mine only had two rivets. Remember the end cap and spring mechanism are connected as one piece so once you remove the rivets just pull the end cap off with the spring. Great video.

    I did not have assistance when installing the awning fabric on the RV. I rolled the fabric the long way and folded it in half. I carefully climbed the ladder with the awning over my shoulder. Getting the awning started was the hardest part, but once it started it slid down the track easily. I went from the rear of the RV as I had better ladder positioning. Once all the way on I cleaned the track and removed the old fabric as I went. I spent several hours worrying about how I would get it done, and about an hour actually getting it done. Yes, it would be nice to have had help but just doing it myself made my day complete.

      In your case, carefully labeling/tagging each end of each cable and diagraming it out BEFORE disconnecting anything is key to knowing where everything gets attached.

    We are getting the same unit, exactly. Can’t decide about the WD hitch. We have RAM 3500 dually diesel with trailer towing capacity of 35,100. What persuaded you to go with WD setup? GoatPro has the same rig, tows with a 2500 GMC diesel SRW, without any sway issues. Getting very confused. Hoping to avoid the WD, for my wife’s sake when she travels alone.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks 10 днів тому

      Keeping in mind that being new to a towable, we’re not experts on this (YET!😉), we think you will have no problem because you have a 3500 with such large towing capacity, and, we assume, large payload capacity. As we went with a 1500, while very well equipped to tow the 19MKS, we are much closer to our capacities than you are. We have a 12,900 lb towing capacity, and a 1600 pound payload capacity. The weight distribution hitch was needed to counter the squat on the rear of the truck from placing such a high percentage of the payload onto the ball. We’re guessing that your payload is far higher, reducing or likely completely eliminating the need for worrying about weight distribution or sway. Our experience a couple of years ago using a 2500 RAM truck to tow a Black Series trailer required no special Sway or weight distribution considerations at all, and we are guessing you’re in the same situation. But be sure to do your homework when it comes to payload, as that is a big factor in both WD and sway. And congratulations on your upcoming 19MKS. We’ve only been on board for a couple of weeks, but we are absolutely in love with it!

      Thanks for your excellent reply. Feeling much better after what you shared. Can’t wait to start this new phase of life, after 28 years of horse camping in a rig where equines got most of the room and the rig was so big it was nearly impossible to get into many traditional RV sites. Looking forward to watching your upcoming videos on the new rig.

      They’re designed to stay in place, but are actually pretty easy to remove if you wanted too, since they’re flexible. Just pull down on one edge, and they should pop off. If they’re especially tight, a pair of channel locks will do the job.
